THE DISASTERS OF WAR

 ‘Los Desastres de la Guerra’ (The Disasters of War) is a suite of etchings which examines a complex period in Spanish history which witnessed the Napoleonic invasion and the outbreak of the Peninsular War (1808 – 1814).  Produced between 1808 and 1810,  The Disasters of War series recounts, in horrific detail, the impact of the war on the Spanish people.  An enigmatic commentary on human nature, The Disasters of War has earned an important position in the history of art.

 

The political subject matter of this suite, which depicts violent scenes of terror, torture and murder, required Goya to hide The Disasters of War suite in order to avoid persecution during the reinstated Spanish Inquisition under the regime of Ferdinand VII.  It was not until 1863, 35 years after Goya’s death, that this first edition suite of etchings was printed in its entirety by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, Madrid.

 

Originally numbered on the bottom left corner, Goya renumbered each plate on the top left hand corner once he completed and sequentially ordered his suite.  The first 45 plates in this series are dedicated to the Peninsular war.  Numbers 46 through 61 concentrate on the Madrid famine of 1811-12 and the final 15 plates are the “caprichos enfaticos” (emphatic caprices of fantasies).  These symbolic prints were created at the end of the Peninsular War in 1814, and express resentment towards the reign of Ferdinand VII.  Goya added his ‘caprichos enfaticos’ to the suite in 1814.
