Mark Gaskin

Mark Gaskin

Mark Gaskin is a Vancouver based artist working with encaustic and mixed media.  Gaskin’s edgy brushwork and high-contrast palette gives his floral compositions a disturbing realism.  The results are unsettling and beautiful.  Bound within his signature border, his portraits of women bathe in contemplative and overexposed light.  The proximity of these faces is clear and close; they are not seen from afar.  This coupled with their enlarged scale allows for an intimate exploration by the viewer of both the subject and surface.  His work straddles the ground between epic poetry and intimate, everyday moments.  The resulting surface, with its rich, time-worn look and wall-like solidity, reinforces the impact of the larger than life central image.  His work has been exhibited internationally, including shows in the United States, Belgium and Singapore and can be found in significant private and public collections nationally and internationally.
